Rena Finder

I was born in 1929 in Krakow, Poland to Rozia Windisch Ferber (9/14/1902–2/26/1966) and Moses Ferber (11/10/1902–1/1943).

Between the ages of ten and sixteen, I lived under Nazi occupation. First we were forced into the Krakow Ghetto, where people died from starvation and murder. My father was killed in Auschwitz in l942. My mother and I were sent to Plaszow, a slave labor camp where we were guarded by vicious SS and Ukrainians. I witnessed daily beatings and executions. From there we were transported to Auschwitz. Our heads were shaved, but we survived the selections and were not sent to the gas chambers.

Oscar Schindler, a German industrialist, saved 1,000 Jews who worked for him in Emalia, a factory near Plaszov. When he learned that we were in Auschwitz, he found us and brought us to another factory that he had created in Brinnlitz, Czechoslovakia, thereby saving my mother and me. All this and much more I endured before the age of 16.

I am married to Mark Finder, a survivor of 4 Nazi camps. We have three daughters and five grandchildren.
