After two years under the Russians, the Polish Ukraine was invaded by Germany on June 22, 1941, and we were forced to do hard labor. Many of us were routinely beaten by Ukrainian guards; others were murdered. Holding Jews for ransom became commonplace.
In September of 1942, we were marched to a ghetto in the nearby town of Mizocz. One month later we were forced out of the ghetto to a place where large ditches had been dug. The Ukrainians ordered us to strip and to get in the ditches where several thousand Jews were massacred. A few of us ran. We were shot and left for dead. I crawled out from under dead bodies and dragged myself to the woods. For two years, a friend and I hid in the forest and carried out sabotage missions against the Germans.
My brother Hershel was killed in the Zdolbunow roundup of 1942. I am the sole survivor of my family.
