March 18, 2005: Conference on Genocide Press Release

The Holocaust Center, Boston North Inc. is pleased to announce that reservations are being accepted for an important conference on Genocide for educators, clergy, public officials, media, police, and the general public on March 18 th, 8:00AM-3:15 PM, at Salem State College’s Ellison Center.

The day will focus on A CALL TO ACTION: PREVENTING GENOCIDE IN OURTIME. Participants will explore the historic precedents established from the Holocaust and then examine how they have been applied to more recent acts of genocide. The goal of the conference is to provide tools for the individual person to confront modern acts of genocide and ultimately ways to try to prevent genocide.

Highlighting the day will be presentations from three survivors of genocide: ERNEST RUGWIZANGONGA, Rwanda, SMAJL CENGIC, Bosnia, and SONIA WEITZ, the Holocaust. US Army soldiers, ROSEGOULD and BEN MAILOT, will discuss the aftermath of genocide, peace-keeping, and the impact on the survivors.

A morning panel will feature a panel with DR CHRISTOPHER MAURIELLO, Salem State on Nuremberg Precedents; DR. PADRAIC O’HARE, Merrimack College on A MoralFramework for Justice, and ALLAN A. RYAN JR., former US Dept. of Justice Office of Special Investigation on Coming to Terms with Justice.

Harvard Law School PROFESSOR MARTHA MINOW will give the keynote presentation, Between Vengeance and Forgiveness.

DR. MARVIN WILSON , Gordon College, DR. SHELDON BROWN, North Shore Community College, DR. ROBERT MCANDREWS, Salem State College, and REV-DR. SUSAN JAREK-GLIDDEN, The Holocaust Center, will serve as moderators for the day. DR. MARC GLASSER, Salem State College and DR. WAYNE BURTON and PAULFRYDRICH, North Shore Community College will give greetings.

Sponsoring the conference are The Holocaust Center, Boston North Inc., Salem State College Graduate School, North Shore Community College’s 17 th Forum on Tolerance, the Anti-Defamation League, Essex County D A’s Office, Facing History and Ourselves, Peabody Institute Library (Peabody) and the Center for the Study of Jewish/Christian Relations at Merrimack College.

Application fee includes a light breakfast and lunch.
