Andrew Gross*

I was born on April 12, 1929 in Gradia Romania to Marton (b.1889 d. 1944) and Nona (b. 1900 d. 1944) Gross.

"I have a duty to tell, maybe that's why I survived. I'm the witness."

In March, 1944, the Germans invaded Hungary. The destruction that they had visited upon the Jews in Poland over a period of four years, they managed to inflict upon the Jews in Hungary in only four months with the active participation of the Hungarian people.

My parents and I were sent to Auschwitz, where my parents were exterminated. I, being fifteen years old, was sent to the children's barracks. I heard that the children were also being exterminated, so I escaped to an adult barrack and was not discovered. I was selected for work and sent to Kaufering, a sub-camp of Dachau, where I barely managed to survive until April 29, 1945, Liberation Day.

I spent four years after the war as a displaced person in Europe. In 1949 I immigrated to the United States. It was not until 1963 that I discovered my half-sister,Tova, had survived the war, returned to Romania and later immigrated to Israel. We were reunited in 1966.

My wife, Charlotte and I have a son, a daughter, and four grandchildren.
